The Center for Applied Research in Decision Making (CARD) at Temple University’s Fox School of Business leverages recent developments in diverse fields like economics, psychology, neuroscience and business administration to advance our understanding of how people make decisions. This interdisciplinary center aims to be the forefront of translational research, facilitating dialogue among academic researchers, practitioners, business clients and the broader society to translate fundamental research insights into practical business solutions.
We invite PhD students from around the world to submit interdisciplinary and multi- methodological dissertation proposals to the inaugural dissertation proposal competition organized by CARD and the Fox School’s Department of Marketing, and co-sponsored by Ipsos.
We encourage all eligible doctoral students who are studying topics related to decision making using multi-methodological approaches to submit summaries of their dissertation proposals. The proposals can be across a range of disciplines including but not limited to marketing, management, information systems, psychology, economics and neuroscience.
Eligibility
Candidates must be at the post-comprehensive exam and dissertation stage of the PhD program and must not have defended their dissertations at the time of submission.
Proposal Guidelines
- Proposals may be submitted in the form of a Word or pdf file attachment.
- Proposals must be no longer than 12 pages, double-spaced and including references
and all tables/figures. Proposals should have 12-point font and one-inch margins.
- The first page should include the title and abstract (250 words max) but no author information. The proposal should describe the research objectives, highlight the proposed methodology and interdisciplinary nature of the work, and specify anticipated contributions both to theory and practice.
- In addition to the proposal, please also include a short summary (750 words max) of the expected contributions of the dissertation proposal to academic understanding and applied practice. This summary should be submitted as a separate file and does not count towards the 12-page limit for the main proposal.
Submission
The deadline for submission is Nov. 30, 2022, at 11:59 p.m. ET.
Proposals should be e-mailed to with the title “Submission to CARD Dissertation Proposal Award.” All candidates must attest to the fact that they meet the requirements of PhD candidature and copy their dissertation chair in their submission.
Evaluation and Awards
A committee of scholars with expertise in decision making will evaluate the proposals and select the winner.
Dissertation proposals will be judged based on the soundness of theory, interdisciplinary nature of the research, and potential translational value of the research findings to business and society. It is permissible, but not necessary, to include preliminary results in your submission. In keeping with the mission of CARD, boldness and innovation in the use of multiple methods (e.g., behavioral measures, real-world data, eye tracking, facial coding, facial EMG, heart rate, skin conductance, EEG, fNIRS and fMRI) will be important criteria in the judging process.
The winners will be announced in spring 2023. The winner will receive an award of $2,500 and the second prize will receive $1,000. Winners may also be invited to present their proposal at an appropriate forum, details of which will be provided later.
