About This Opportunity
This is an exciting opportunity for a Research Fellow to achieve national and international recognition in interdisciplinary and impactful research and to develop and leverage on collaborations between the Queensland Brain Institute and the School of Economics (specifically, the Behavioural and Economic Science Cluster within the School). At this level it is expected that the incumbent will efficiently manage service and engagement roles and activities.
Key responsibilities include:
1. Research
- Produce quality research outputs consistent with discipline norms by publishing or exhibiting in international research journals, with a lead role in some outputs.
- Foster a sustainable critical mass of research collaborations between the Queensland Brain Institute and the School of Economics.
- Apply for and secure external research income to support identified research projects in collaboration between the Queensland Brain Institute and the School of Economics.
- Participate in or contribute as chief investigator (often in conjunction with more experienced researchers) to applications for competitive research funding to support projects and activities involving the Queensland Brain Institute and the School of Economics, which includes actively seeking, obtaining and managing research funding.
- Contribute to progressing towards transfer of knowledge, technology and practices to research end users through translation, including commercialisation of UQ intellectual property.
- Review and draw upon best practice research methodologies, particularly from cognitive neuroscience and behavioural and experimental economics.
- Supervise and students completing research higher degrees including PhD and Honours programs.
2. Teaching
- Where undergraduate and postgraduate teaching is undertaken achieve teaching quality as indicated by approved surveys and outcomes for students and improve or innovate where appropriate in response to feedback.
3. Citizenship and Service
- Demonstrate behaviours that align to the UQ values.
- Shows leadership of self and others through mentoring, collaboration and active participation in priority activities for the unit
- Provide support to other academic positions and unit operations as needed during other team members absences.
- Effectively and efficiently manage internal service roles and administrative processes as required, including participation in decision-making and service on relevant committees.
- Collaborate in service activities external to the immediate organisation units.
- Actively pursue and develop external links and partnerships by cultivating relationships with industry, government departments, professional bodies and the wider community.
4. Other
Ensure you are aware of and comply with legislation and University policy relevant to the duties undertaken, including but not exclusive to:
- The University’s Code of Conduct.
- Requirements of the Queensland occupational health and safety (OH&S) legislation and related OH&S responsibilities and procedures developed by the University or Institute/School.

About You
Essential
- PhD in cognitive science, economics, experimental psychology and/or human neuroscience
- Experience in the development and implementation of novel experimental protocols for assessing decision-making and related cognitive functions in human participants
- Experience in obtaining ethical approval for, and management of, behavioural and brain imaging studies of human cognitive function
- Experience in the development and implementation of computational modelling approaches to human behavioural and brain imaging data (including electroencephalography and functional magnetic resonance imaging data)
- Experience with models of economic decision making
- High level expertise in programming in Python and/or Matlab
- Ability to contribute to and lead on national and/or international competitive grant funds
- Ability to work effectively across the Queensland Brain Institute and School of Economics, in interdisciplinary research teams, as well as ability to work independently
- High levels of personal integrity, transparency and capability in stakeholder management.
Desirable
- Expertise in behavioural and experimental psychology and economics
- Experience specifically with economic models of decision making under risk, rational inattention, formation of preferences
- Demonstrated track record of attracting national and/or international competitive grant funds
- Experience supervising undergraduate and postgraduate research students
What We Can Offer
This is a Full-time, 100% FTE Fixed-term position for 3 years at Academic Level B. The role holder will be employed at FTE = 0.6 for the Queensland Brain Institute and at FTE = 0.4 for the School of Economics.
The full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range of $101,533.66 to $120,570.86 plus super of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be in the range of $118,794.38 to $141,067.91 per annum.
